Miguel (Kaleidoscope Dream)
3.5
By Rob Tannenbaum
October 5, 2012

Just when you thought there were no new ways to say "I love you," here comes Miguel Pimentel: "I'm gonna do you like drugs tonight." With this pledge, Miguel proves that he is, easily, uninhibited enough to inherit the tradition of eccentric R&B freakiness handed down from Marvin Gaye** to Prince** to R. Kelly**. He rubs his shadowy croon against electronic gurgles ("Use Me") or electric guitar ("Pussy Is Mine," which is not about a cat), keeping his tracks spare and unpredictable. In the gentle, wonderful hit "Adorn," he promises adoration to his lady; it's the first song here, and once he's in the front door, he wants the lights down and the panties off.

If RB music were to gain back any of its credibility, artists like Miguel and Frank Ocean would serve as the future of the genre. Love adorn but haven't bought the album yet thought I definitely plan to!
